YQCA Enrollment

What in the world is YQCA you ask?

YQCA stands for Youth for the Quality Care of Animals. It is a REQUIRED course that helps teach youth about the proper care and management of animals. 4-H and FFA livestock shows aren't just about showing the animal, after all!! Instead we strive to teach you about responsibility, record keeping, empathy for others and animals, goal setting, the list could go on and on.

YQCA is a class that helps youth with some of the background behind taking care of animals before and after the fair. The program focuses on three main areas throughout the training: Animal Well-being, Food Safety, and Life Skills.

Youth that take any of the following animals to the fair are REQUIRED to participate in YQCA or they will NOT be able to sell their animal. Certification is due on June 15th.

  • Market Beef
  • Market Lamb
  • Market Goat
  • Market Swine
  • Rabbit
  • Poultry
*Notice that Breeding stock, bucket calves, and feeder calves are not required. However, we highly encourage youth to attend to get the most out of their project! Horse projects are required to pass Level 1 certification which is very specific to horses but are also able to learn something from these classes.

Each year we offer face-to-face or online classes. The online classes are offered at your own pace and through the national website. The face-to-face class is also through the national YQCA program, however, it is taught by local Extension Staff. Either option will work!!

Regardless of which one works best for your family, you must go through the YQCA Website to register and pay for the course. There are benefits and drawbacks to each option so whatever works best for your family is fine.

Face-to-Face: One hour course that only requires participation in order to pass. Youth must be present the entire time. Cost is $3. Register before attending. Select a training anywhere near you that fits your schedule. If you take a training within Garden or Morrill County, you do not have to present the office with a certificate upon completion because we know you were there!

Online Course: Youth will participate in three modules that are very specific to their age level. At the end of each module, there is a short quiz. If you fail the quiz, you can review material and re-take the quiz an hour later. The cost is $12 per youth. Upon completion you MUST bring in a copy of your certificate or send via email to the office in order for us to know you completed the course.

Face-to- Face trainings I will be offering this year, are:

  • March 2nd - 6:00 p.m. Bayard High School Auditorium (ages 8-18)
  • March 11th - 4:00 p.m. Garden County Elementary Science Room (ages 8-13)
  • March 11th - 6:00 p.m. Garden County Elementary Gym (ages 10 to 18)
  • March 21st - 2:00 p.m. Prairie Winds Community Center in Bridgeport (ages 8-18)

Enrolling on 4hOnline

You have decided to try this 4-H thing out so now what??  Well first CONGRATULATIONS!!! Deciding to jump into 4-H is the great thing to do for your child's future. I participated for 11 years and look at me... just kidding!!  But seriously, if you have committed to being a part of 4-H it is time to get your child enrolled on 4hOnline. 4hOnline is the web-based registration program that allows youth to be participate in county and statewide events, including county and state fairs. Nebraska just passed in January of 2021 that all counties across the state will have enrollment on 4hOnline open until June 15th. HOWEVER, we strongly encourage you to sign up early so that you can keep up to date on upcoming events.  4hOnline can seem kind of daunting the first time you get on! Below are some videos you can you watch as you go through the process. Here are also some helpful tips: Use Chrome as your internet browser. It is the only browser this program likes for some reason!  Go to  htt

Welcome to 4-H!!!

4-H is an awesome program for youth to develop life-long skills that will set them ahead of their peers in their academic and professional journeys ahead of them. I am not just saying that because I have to! I am saying that because I am an example of it!  My mom enrolled me in 4-H when I was 8. Things were different back then - no clover kids and you could only take one project your first year. That was a tough decision with so many things sounding so cool and interesting at that age. With my mom's influence, I started with sewing. I could enter within Sewing Level 1, which was called Sew for Fun back then, and actually take 3-4 different projects. That began my sewing career. While I don't do a lot of sewing today, I entered at least one project every year until a senior in high school. I made dress-up clothes for game days, games for kids, and a few other random items. I was honored to represent my county two years at the State Fashion Show.  While I didn't realize the
